Guru Sahib has stressed very high values for Sikhs. There are hukams in Gurbani that let alone having physical relations with opposite sex, even viewing them with feelings of Kaam is prohibited:
ਪਰ ਤ੍ਰਿਅ ਰੂਪੁ ਨ ਪੇਖੈ ਨੇਤ੍ਰ ॥
(Let your eyes not see the beauty of other women).
There are several such pankitis in Gurbani that tell us how to keep our eyes pure of viewing opposite sex in kaamic way, keeping ears pure of slander of others etc.
Lakshmana
Coming back to the story of Lakshman keeping his eyes pure by not even looking at Sita, should inspire us to have high character. While, it may seem that cutting the nose of Saroopnakha was a bit harsh thing to do for Lakshmana but before he cut her nose, he had to endure extreme seduction from the hands of Saroopnakha. Saroopnakha as her name tells was a very beautiful woman and she used many ways to seduce Lakshmana but failed. It would have been better if Lakshmana had not cut her nose but that’s not what’s being discussed here nor we are discussing other parts of Ramayana here. Take what’s good and ignore what’s bad. This is the character of a Hans (swan) that separates milk and water and takes only milk.
Arjun
Coming to Duaapar Yug we see that Arjuna who is also called Dhanjaya and Partha was seduced by the heavenly beauty of Indra-Lok - Urvashi but Partha stayed unfazed by the attemps of Urvashi. In the end, he was cursed to be an impotent person for one year. This curse became a blessing for him because it helped him disguise himself from the Kauravas, when the Pandavas were supposed to stay in exile undetected for one year. In Mahabharata there were people who had lose characters too e.g. the King of Sindh – Jayadratha. He tried to abduct Panchali (Drupadi) but was caught in time by the Pandavas who were going to kill him but pardoned him because he was their brother-in-law. Their cousin sister, the sister of Duryodhana – Dushala was married to Jayadratha.
Others like Vishvamitra, the famous Rishi, who was meditating deeply when the throne of Raja Indra started shaking. Raja Indra's throne started shaking because Indra thought that Vishwamitra was doing all this bhagti to attain the throne of Indra. He sent his most beautiful Apsara (heavenly woman) to seduce him. She successfully seduced this great Maharishi and he engaged in Kaam for many years and gave up his meditation. So strong is the force of Kaam that destroyed the bhagti of many. As per Gurmat, Gurmat Naam is the only way to be saved from Kaam. There's no other way.
Puran Bhagat
The famous Lok-Nayak of Punjab - Puran Bhagat - was a person of very high morals and for keeping his character clean he had to endure many hardships. When he became youth, his step-mother Rani Luna, who was said to extremely beautiful as per the famous Muslim writer Kadir Yaar who wrote Kissa-Puran Bhagat, tried to seduce him. When he refused to fall for her, she accused him of trying to molest her. His father Raja Salvan, who was the king of Sialkot (a city in Pakistan now) was blinded by Rani Luna, got very upset at Puran Bhagat. He ordered that his hands and feet be cut and he be thrown in a well outside the kingdom. Puran Bhagat was so generous and magnanimous that he did not open his mouth to tell of the ill-doing of his step-mother. His mother Rani Ichhran cried so much that she lost her eyesight. Puran Bhagat was left to die in the well but he was saved by Gorakhnath the leader of Sidhas and the top-disciple of Machhindernath. Puran Bhagat to up Yog and became a Yogi.
Puran Bhagat was said to be very good looking and one day when he was out on his round to beg alms, he ended up outside the palace of Rani Sundran, a beautiful woman who is said to be so beautiful that people would lose consciousness looking at her. Kadir Yaar the poet has written this incident very dramatically. When the Rani heard the sound of “Alakh Naranjan’ the cry of Yogis, she sent one of her maids outside to give alms. When the maid beheld Puran Bhagat, she fainted because of his good looks. When the maid did not arrive for quite sometime, Rani Sundran herself went outside to give alms and she too fainted looking at him. When she regained her consciousness, she cajoled him in many ways to give up his vows of celibacy and accept her as his consort. He politely refused. She even went as far as approaching Gorakhnath the Guru of Puran Bhagat but Puran Bhagat did not budge. In other words, the point to make is that Puran Bhagat was known for his high character and Punjabi mothers to this day, tell their children tales of Puran Bhagat in order to build characters of their children.
I heard the story of Puran Bhagat from my grandmother when I was a child and I remember that I never got tired of hearing it. I used to ask her to narrate this tale to me everyday. My grandmother used to narrate the plight of Puran Bhagat’s mother Ichhran so vividly that I used to cry. I used to love that part when Puran Bhagat after doing bhagti for many years arrived at his hometown Sialkot. He sat outside the town in a dead garden but when he arrived there, the garden became alive again. The flowers bloomed and everything became green. The town heard about the arrival of a great yogi. The king and his family came to pay homage. His step-mother Luna arrived as well along with his mother Ichhran. My grandmother used to tell me that though his mother was blind but when she comes in her son's presence, her mamta (motherly love) awakened through her sixth sense and milk started flowing from her breasts. This way she found out that her son Puran Bhagat was alive. Luna who had been unable to bear any child to the king regretted and admitted her mistake in open. Puran Bhagat got vindicated. Puran Bhagat then blessed her and gave her boon to have a great child. His uttering came true and in due time a son was born to Luna who was another great hero of Punjab folk. He was none other than the famous Raja Rasalu. Sorry for going off topic. The point I was trying to make was that high character is an absolute must for Bhagti.
Sardar Baghel Singh
One of the incident that took place during the 1700s is that a Muslim girl of Lahore royal family falls in hands of Singhs under the command of Sardar Baghel Singh. Sardar jee in those times was in his prime and a very handsome young man. On the other hand, this Muslim girl who’s name I can’t remember now was known for her good looks. She was accustomed to getting attention for her good looks. Anyone who looked at her once would look at her again as is the natural reflex. At first when she finds herself amidst the sworn enemy of her family – the Singhs, she is terrified. But when she notices that Singhs don’t even look at her, she gets a bit surprised and upset too. She can’t understand why no one looks at her and why her beauty is no longer found attractive here. She is safely escorted back to her parents but before that she gets an opportunity to talk to Sardar Baghel Singh. He explains to her the high moral standards set by Guru Sahib. She gets very impressed hearing all this. Such was the character of Singhs. All this has been very beautifully captured by the superb writing of Sardar Sadhu Singh Hamdard the former editor of Punjabi Ajit in India. I read this when I was a child, in India.
Master Tara Singh and the English woman
An English woman wrote a very interesting incident concerning Master Tara Singh. Master Tara Singh was very young at that time and was travelling in train. Across from him was sitting a young English woman. She had been accustomed to attention from men but it’s written that she was impressed to see that not once did Master jee try to take a glance at her. Such was the high character of our leaders in the past.
Bau Mal Singh jee in Belgium
Bau Mal Singh jee, one of the closest companion of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee was serving in 1st World War in Belgium. During the evening time, he was sitting on a bench when some women sat near him. The started conversing with him and at some point asked him if he liked them. They had other intentions for Bau jee but they did not know that Bau jee was not an ordinary person. He was a player of high spiritual states. Bau jee responded by saying that yes he liked them. They were very pleased to hear this. The next moment Bau jee said that he liked them like his sister and daughter. They were shocked to hear and fled uttering unintelligible utterings.
Sant Arjun Singh jee
Sant Arjun Singh jee was a companion of Bhai Sahib Randhir Singh jee. Sant jee was a very great soul. When Bhai Sahib was arrested, he too was arrested by police and they asked him if he knew Bhai Sahib. His response was very interesting. He said, “what to talk about me, the three worlds know Bhai Sahib”. The police released him after keeping him in detention for couple of days. He knew not what fear was. He worried not about anything. He stayed in the divine state of Naam all the time.
One day, he was submerged in the divine colours of Naam that he wandered unintentionally to that part of the city where flesh trade takes place. He was young and handsome and as is the custom of flesh trade bazaar, the working women there started calling and seducing him. At that point Sant jee got aware of his surroundings. He was not a normal person like Ajamal who was hit by Kaam when a young prostitute had just looked at him provocatively and this way lost his whole life to Kaam. Sant jee were very accomplished Gursikh and right away they were hit by immense bairaag. In full bairaag, they in their loud piercing voice started doing kirtan. Imagine what chaos would have occurred at this bazaar at the sight of a Sant doing kirtan. The hearts that were burning with the fire of Kaam were extinguished in an instant. The women who just a moment ago were trying to seduce Sant jee, fell at their feet. Their hearts were purified by the effect of Gurbani kirtan. They beseeched and they implored to him to save them from Kalyug. Sant jee stayed oblivious and when they continued their imploring, Sant jee freed themselve from them and hurriedly left the place by declaring that those will be saved who accept the amrit of Siri Dasmesh jee. Such was the character of Gursikhs of those times.
GURU NANAK SAHIB IN SRI LANKA
When Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaj went to Siri Lanka, to quench the thirst of Raja Shiv Nabh, they were put to rigorous testing by Raja Shiv Nabh. Raja Shiv Nabh longed for the darshan of Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee ever since he heard about them from Bhai Mansukh who was a Sikh of Guru Nanak Sahib.
Raja Shiv Nabh asked Bhai Mansukh, how he could meet Guru Nanak and asked for his address. Bhai Masukh replied saying that his Guru i.e. Guru Nanak Sahib is everywhere because he is one with Vaheguru. He told the Raja that all one had to do was call out Guru Nanak Dev jee and he would come to him.
Mansukh was a trader and had gone to Lanka on a business trip. There he got arrested by the king for not keeping fast (Ikadashi Varat). For his trial he was brought before the king and in his conversation, Bhai Mansukh told him about Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaaj. After hearing about Siri Guru jee, he started longing for his darshan.
Raja Shiv Nabh became a bairaagi, a diwaana, a shadaayee (crazy) of Guru Nanak Dev jee. Many imposters took advantage of the bairagi condition of the king and posed as Guru Nanak to decieve the king. The king as a result had become extremely paranoid about the sadhoos and holy men coming to him. He used to put them to rigorous testing before placing his faith in them. None of the holy men who came to see Shiv Nabh, passed this testing.
The hardest part of the testing was when beautiful women who were trained in the art of seducing men, seduced the sadhoos. They used to dress up in very revealing and provocative way. No one was able to resist them. The sadhoos who had stayed away from Kaam and had controlled it all their lives fell when they met these women. Many Sadhoos this way got humiliated and punished. The sadhoos were made to stay in the guest house designed specifically for this purpose for days. It is easy to withstand an attack from kaam if it comes directly but if one is seduced slowly and very subtly, then it can be very hard to resist.
Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaj too was put through this testing by Raja Shiv Nabh. They (the seducing women) came to Guru Nanak but as they came close to Satgur jee, they felt that their fire of kaam was being extinguished. They could not even attempt to seduce him. The odd ones who tried saw all their attempts failing in front of Guru Nanak. How could they seduce Guru Nanak Dev jee who himself is the kartaa (creater) of everyone? Guru Nanak himself had created these women into beautiful forms, then how could they seduce their creater? They failed. They not only failed but they fell at the lotus feet of Guru Nanak Dev jee. They felt that fire of their desires had been extinguished.
The women who used to come to seduce would come in disguise of welcoming the new sadhu. They would come and do aarti of the sadhus and then when they got a chance, they seduced the Sadhoos but when they came closer to Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaaj and attempted to do his aarti and in seduce him, Siri Guru jee raised their hand and stopped them saying that aarti should only be done of one Akaal Purakh – Vaheguru. Then they told then women by addressing them as daughters, that the aarti of Vaheguru was already going on.
These women were professional seducers but after hearing preaching of Siri Guru jee, their fire of kaam got extinguished. At this time, Siri Guru jee sang out his famous shabad – GAACHHO, PUTREE RAAJ KUAAR || NAAM BHANO SACH, DOT SAVAAR||
Gachho means, go away. Siri Guru jee addressed them in the this pankiti as “Putree” meaning daughter and “Rajkuaar” meaning princess. Hearing such kind words from Siri guru jee, they were totally melted and felt great peace within themselves. It was greatness of Siri Guru jee to call women doing such detestable profession as daughters and princesses. These women had only known Kaam in their life. They did not know anything else. Merciful Siri Guru jee did kirpa on everyone he saw.
Then the Raja came to Guru Nanak Sahib and he came bare feet. He finally had met his beloved one. He asked Siri Guru jee a lot of questions and received all answers from Guru Sahib. The famous Praan Sanglee book that discusses in detail the difference between Gurmat and Yog-mat, is said to have been recorded at Lanka. The king – Shivnabh Singh was very interested in Hatha Yoga and for this reason Guru Sahib explained to the king in great detail the difference between Gurmat Yog and the Hath Yog practiced by the yogis.

Gursikh living in the Dark Age of Kalyug in present time
Today also, there are Gursikhs both male and female, who are living in the Western countries but maintaining high standards of Gursikhi. Today’s it’s harder than past to keep good character because the storm of Kaam in Kalyug today is so strong and vigorous that the whole world today is driven by Kaam and is drowning in this ocean.
Gursikhs Bachay and Bachiyaan who are resisting pressures and keeping their characters clean are so much worthy that lowly persons like this daas should clean their feet and drink that water. I have mad respect for persons who are keeping their Sikhi and staying pure of 4 Bajjar Kurehits in this dark age of Kalyug.
On whom Guru Sahib themselves do kirpa, they can beat the 5 vices including Kaam. Those individuals who by the kirpa of Guru Sahib have been able to lead lives pure of Kaam related mistakes like fornication and adultery are blessed souls and deserve utmost reverence for this, irrespective of the religion they belong to.

The odd ones who tried saw all their attempts failing in front of Guru Nanak. How could they seduce Guru Nanak Dev jee who himself is the kartaa (creater) of everyone? Guru Nanak himself had created these women into beautiful forms, then how could they seduce their creater? They failed. They not only failed but they fell at the lotus feet of Guru Nanak Dev jee. They felt that fire of their desires had been extinguished.
The women who used to come to seduce would come in disguise of welcoming the new sadhu. They would come and do aarti of the sadhus and then when they got a chance, they seduced the Sadhoos but when they came closer to Siri Guru Nanak Dev jee Maharaaj and attempted to do his aarti and in seduce him, Siri Guru jee raised their hand and stopped them saying that aarti should only be done of one Akaal Purakh – Vaheguru. Then they told then women by addressing them as daughters, that the aarti of Vaheguru was already going on.
These women were professional seducers but after hearing preaching of Siri Guru jee, their fire of kaam got extinguished. At this time, Siri Guru jee sang out his famous shabad – GAACHHO, PUTREE RAAJ KUAAR || NAAM BHANO SACH, DOT SAVAAR||
Gachho means, go away. Siri Guru jee addressed them in the this pankiti as “Putree” meaning daughter and “Rajkuaar” meaning princess. Hearing such kind words from Siri guru jee, they were totally melted and felt great peace within themselves. It was greatness of Siri Guru jee to call women doing such detestable profession as daughters and princesses. These women had only known Kaam in their life. They did not know anything else. Merciful Siri Guru jee did kirpa on everyone he saw.
Then the Raja came to Guru Nanak Sahib and he came bare feet. He finally had met his beloved one. He asked Siri Guru jee a lot of questions and received all answers from Guru Sahib. The famous Praan Sanglee book that discusses in detail the difference between Gurmat and Yog-mat, is said to have been recorded at Lanka. The king – Shivnabh Singh was very interested in Hatha Yoga and for this reason Guru Sahib explained to the king in great detail the difference between Gurmat Yog and the Hath Yog practiced by the yogis.

Gursikh living in the Dark Age of Kalyug in present time
Today also, there are Gursikhs both male and female, who are living in the Western countries but maintaining high standards of Gursikhi. Today’s it’s harder than past to keep good character because the storm of Kaam in Kalyug today is so strong and vigorous that the whole world today is driven by Kaam and is drowning in this ocean.
Gursikhs Bachay and Bachiyaan who are resisting pressures and keeping their characters clean are so much worthy that lowly persons like this daas should clean their feet and drink that water. I have mad respect for persons who are keeping their Sikhi and staying pure of 4 Bajjar Kurehits in this dark age of Kalyug.
On whom Guru Sahib themselves do kirpa, they can beat the 5 vices including Kaam. Those individuals who by the kirpa of Guru Sahib have been able to lead lives pure of Kaam related mistakes like fornication and adultery are blessed souls and deserve utmost reverence for this, irrespective of the religion they belong to.
